The Dutch Mining Act (Mijnbouwwet), is the leading legislation for deep geothermal energy. In the context of the Mining Act, an exploration permit is required for performing the first geothermal drilling. If the drilling proves to be sufficiently productive, the exploration permit can be converted into a extraction permit. In addition to the exploration and extraction permit, an environmental permit is required in addition to several local permits (construction permit, etc.). Information about permits which have already been applied for or granted and the procedures can be found on the Dutch Oil and Gas Portal (Nederlands Olie- en Gasportaal). The map of the Netherlands with the overview of permits as of January 1, 2011 is also available as a pdf.
